Traditionally the Honu or Sea Turtle was a guardian for the ancient Hawaiian family.   Sea turtles are currently an endangered species.  A good spot to see turtles here on Maui is the protected marine preserve at Honolua Bay.

The back of the carving features a history of the petroglyph and a short artist bio.  The piece is also signed and dated by the artist.

"This carving has varied surface texture and coloring.  The colors range from bands of light and dark reddish hues with accents of underlying greys.  The stone in this piece is Indian slate."
