This Petroglyph is carved on natural slate and includes bamboo and
hemp wall hanger. The design
is carved into the surface of the stone and darkened with
pigments. The stone used in this carving is Golden Ray
Chinese Quartzite. It has a light surface texture and warm
taupe and golden coloring.
Petroglyph is a word that
comes from the Greek words, "petros", for rock and 'glyphen", to
carve. Literally, petroglyphs are rock carvings. The ancient
Hawaiians called them ki'i pohaku or stone images.
Traditionally the Honu or Sea Turtle was an ancestral guardian
for the ancient Hawaiian family. The honu connects us with our
past as they are symbols of longevity and the ultimate
navigators who return to the sands of their birth. They are the
link between the old and the new.
