This original oil (alkyd) is
painted on textured panel and features 3 sea turtle
petroglyphs. The Native Hawaiians call the green sea
turtle "Honu" and the Hawaiian word for petroglyph is "Ki'i
pohaku" which roughly translates to Stone Images. This
painting has a textured base which adds visual interest when
viewing up closely.
"I couldn't be more pleased
with how this painting turned out. I revisited a color
palette that I had used before in the painting
Maui
Ensnares the Sun but
changed order and amounts of blue in the glazing (color
layering) process. The result was an amazing overall
soothing tone of the piece and complex colors and textures
when viewed up close. I kept the tone towards the
bottom of the painting darker and lightened and warmed up
the color as your eye finds the focal point towards the top.
This is reminiscent of when you are snorkeling with the
turtles and as you ascend up from the depths of the ocean,
there is a warm reassuring glow from the sun as it filters
through the surface."
